The first metatarsophalangeal joint meniscus

چکیده
An intra-articular ligament of the first metatarsophalangeal joint (MTPJ) has been observed by the authors during dissection for hallux valgus and hallux rigidus corrective surgery over a number of years. The enigmatic incidence and role of this structure prompted further investigation. A literature review was conducted across several scientific databases using the search terms “first metatarsophalangeal joint” AND “meniscus” OR “anatomy” OR “plica” OR “intra-atricular ligament” OR “ligament”. In an effort to procure additional information several anatomy textbooks including those specific to the foot and ankle were obtained by the primary author for inspection, as were the expert opinions of several fellows of the Australasian College of Podiatric Surgeons. The literature search yielded just two papers pertaining to this structure and no reference had been made in any of the reviewed anatomy texts. One paper made reference to the structure in a case study and proposed it may be an additional ligament or meniscoid tissue. The authors of the second paper found a clear anatomical distinction (origin and insertion) and named it the meniscus of the first MTPJ as it showed histological resemblance to the meniscus in the knee. They proposed the transverse nature of the meniscus may assist in the stability of the joint preventing progression of hallux valgus deformity. On the contrary, the highest incidence of this structure was observed in feet with hallux valgus deformity. No mention has been made of the incidence or role of the meniscus in hallux rigidus pathology. Further research is therefore required to understand the incidence, function and role of the meniscus in the pathology of the first MTPJ.

First Metatarsophalangeal Joint Arthrodesis: A Retrospective Comparison of Crossed-screws, Locking and Non-Locking Plate Fixation with Lag Screw
Background:Locking plate fixation is increasingly used for first metatarsophalangeal joint (MTP-I) arthrodesis. Still there is few comparable clinical data regarding this procedure. Methods:We retrospectively evaluated 60 patients who received an arthrodesis of the MTP-I between January 2008 and June 2010. With 20 patients each we performed a locking plate fixation with lag screw, arthrodesis w...

Surgical reattachment of medial meniscus posterior root tear (MMPRT) with transtibial sutures can delay the presenceof medial knee joint compartment osteoarthritis. Most suture configurations are placed five mm away from the tornmargin in the meniscal substance which is already degenerated and may decrease the pull out strengths of repairconstruct. The number of meniscus penet...
متن کاملEffect of foot posture and inverted foot orthoses on hallux dorsiflexion.
A pronated foot posture is considered to be a factor in limitation of dorsiflexion at the first metatarsophalangeal joint during weightbearing. Customized foot orthoses are widely used to increase dorsiflexion at the first metatarsophalangeal joint in people with pronated feet. However, the effect of foot posture and customized foot orthoses on maximum first metatarsophalangeal joint dorsiflexi...

Anterior cruciate ligament(ACL) and meniscus injuries are the most common injuries in athletes. History, physical exam, MIR, arthrography and arthroscopy are used to confirm the diagnosis. In the present observational descriptive analytical study, the diagnostic value of clinical test was compared with arthroscopic findings. 68 athletes suspected of meniscus or ACL injuries, were sele...
